Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot takes no responsibility for the recent spike in violence in an already deadly city of Chicago.
Instead, she says the violence is due to lax gun laws and the coronavirus lockdowns.
“Lightfoot also suggested that the coronavirus shutdowns that kept people inside for months played a role in creating a ‘perfect storm’ while also pointing out the death of George Floyd as an event that sparked anger in the community,”
Meanwhile, shootings are up 75% and murders in the city rose by 80% in June 2020 compared to June 2019.
Twelve people were killed on Father's Day weekend in Chicago, including a 3-year-old.
When asked about who or what is responsible, Lightfoot said "it's complicated".
“Lightfoot also suggested that the coronavirus shutdowns that kept people inside for months played a role in creating a ‘perfect storm’ while also pointing out the death of George Floyd as an event that sparked anger in the community,” the Examiner reported.
Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara had a different explanation for some of the violence.
“When the top official in this city is blaming the police for everything that's wrong, to hide their inefficiencies and inadequacies, it definitely makes people stop and wonder, ‘What am I doing? Am I going home? Am I going to have a job tomorrow? Am I going to be in jail next week?’" Catanzara said.
Chicago hasn't banned guns, entirely, but they do have strict gun laws and intensive background checks.
The Daily Wire notes that Cook County State's Attorney, Kim Foxx (you may remember her from the Jussie Smollet scandal) instituted a "bail reform" program that has put many violent offenders right back out on the street in as little as 24 hours.
Out of control violence and shootings in Chicago are nothing new but they are definitely out of control. If the mayor cannot identify the problem, and keeps shifting blame, how is she ever going to fix it?
