Chicago Mayor Says ‘Perfect Storm’ to Blame for Spike in Violence

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot takes no responsibility for the recent spike in violence in an already deadly city of Chicago.

Instead, she says the violence is due to lax gun laws and the coronavirus lockdowns.

“Lightfoot also suggested that the coronavirus shutdowns that kept people inside for months played a role in creating a ‘perfect storm’ while also pointing out the death of George Floyd as an event that sparked anger in the community,”

Meanwhile, shootings are up 75% and murders in the city rose by 80% in June 2020 compared to June 2019.

Twelve people were killed on Father's Day weekend in Chicago, including a 3-year-old.

When asked about who or what is responsible, Lightfoot said "it's complicated".

“Lightfoot also suggested that the coronavirus shutdowns that kept people inside for months played a role in creating a ‘perfect storm’ while also pointing out the death of George Floyd as an event that sparked anger in the community,” the Examiner reported.

Fraternal Order of Police President John Catanzara had a different explanation for some of the violence.

“When the top official in this city is blaming the police for everything that's wrong, to hide their inefficiencies and inadequacies, it definitely makes people stop and wonder, ‘What am I doing? Am I going home? Am I going to have a job tomorrow? Am I going to be in jail next week?’" Catanzara said.

Chicago hasn't banned guns, entirely, but they do have strict gun laws and intensive background checks.

The Daily Wire notes that Cook County State's Attorney, Kim Foxx (you may remember her from the Jussie Smollet scandal) instituted a "bail reform" program that has put many violent offenders right back out on the street in as little as 24 hours.

Out of control violence and shootings in Chicago are nothing new but they are definitely out of control. If the mayor cannot identify the problem, and keeps shifting blame, how is she ever going to fix it?

  1. Democrats are the mother in the marriage who sides with the children to get even with the father for doing the right thing. Democrats are the wife in the marriage who over spends, lies, and blames everyone else for her selfish greedy wants. Democrats are a cancer in a two party system. Democrats lead from the rear, they are the treason, deceit, and perversion in America. They control our universities and media. They create the rules as events happen and they ignore them at will. Democrats have a dismal deceitful history in America. They represent the perverts and criminals!

  2. 60 years of Democrat politics plus Jesse Jackson and the rainbow coalition nutcases and this is what you get. More violence and killing in Chicago than in Afghanistan. Black on black…BLM I guess NOT.

  3. The mayor and governor are not fit for their positions, they should solve the problem instead of making excuses and shifting problems here and there, that’s how they get paid for

  4. This crazy, and easy to fix.

1st City Mayor should get out of the way.

2nd get the gang leaders involved.

    3rd stronger prison sentences.

Felons caught with a gun 20 years automatically, Felon kills with a gun life – no passing go no $200.00 – consequences to actions will be a very strong deterrent. Stop and frisk should be in the tool box – desperate times, desperate measures. We CAN NOT tie the hands of the Police – love them or hate them, they are what is holding back all of the violence.

    1. You are the mayor of Chicago.
Other people live& support the great city.
If YOU continue to let these punks ruin the city, it will be the next
Detroit . No one will pay taxes when you cannot walk down a street. Take control. This is the position you ran for
Now take charge, this is not protesting it is rioting
