The media scrambles to explain Joe Biden’s disappointingly low approval ratings, and CBS releases a poll that reveals Americans’ disapproval of the President’s time in office. In a piece titled, “Joe Biden was Set Up to Fail,” The Economist refers to President Biden as “a flawed politician in an impossible job.” The piece further suggests that today’s voters demand more of their leaders than Americans have in the past.
Whatever factors the media or Biden supporters seek to blame, polls nonetheless reveal that voters are growing increasingly frustrated with the President’s job performance. When asked how the Biden presidency has made them feel, only 25% of respondents to a CBS News Poll said they felt satisfied.
Regarding the Biden administration’s focus, 58% of respondents believe not enough attention has been given to the economy. Likewise, 65% responded that the Biden administration’s focus on inflation has been insufficient. Biden’s handling of the economy garnered only 38% approval. Not surprisingly, the President’s handling of inflation met with only 30% approval as rates of inflation climbed last week to a 39-year high of 7%.
The President’s confident campaign promise in 2020 to “shut down the virus,” but not the country has turned out to be a lie on both accounts. According to the aforementioned poll, less than half of respondents believe Biden has done well with handling the COVID outbreak. President Biden experienced a nearly 20% drop in approval in this category, down from 67% in March of last year to 49% currently.
Of the nine categories in which respondents were asked whether or not they approve or disapprove of Biden’s handling, only one category exceeded 50% approval (vaccine distribution). The results of the poll may certainly be skewed to reflect the impact of factors beyond the President’s control. However, the results of the upcoming midterm elections cannot. Biden and his supporters have their work cut out for them in the months ahead.
